Studio Play – February – Lighthouse Mini

Hi guys! I was playing around in the studio yesterday and decided to prep a bunch of surfaces for some new work. I got some great ideas from other artists about using some recycled materials for backgrounds that I had never thought of and decided to try it out. I literally combed through my garbage bag near my work station and dug out some packaging that I had thrown away. I gesso’d it up, and began to play with it.

In this blog post I am sharing the transformation of the packaging strip in the photo below, marked This One. I will show how I took this packaging and transformed it into a piece of art – my Lighthouse Mini!

The first thing I did was add a gesso layer to the front and back of the cardboard packaging. After the gesso layer, I added some dimension and stability using modeling paste and some stencils.

I then added some paper layers to the front and back. By this time, it was firm enough to work on, and there was no indication that it was ever a piece of packaging!

I added some pigment so some of the modeling paste and added a bit here and there.

Then I added some bits of this napkin (which did NOT come out of the garbage). I love using these beautiful napkins in backgrounds. I find that I prefer to open the napkin up and separate the layers so that I can use just the printed layer like tissue paper. I add this layer with matte medium or decopauge glue. I literally melts into the cracks and crevices created by the previous layers and looks amazing.

Once I had my background down, I added some paints and  a bit of ink to it, then finished off the piece with my embellishments. I used some die cut paper decor, a bit of burlap, vintage ribbon, twine and of course a sea shell.

It’s a little shiny because it was still a little wet when I took the photo. I cover everything with a coat of matte medium so that it has a flat look because that’s just what I prefer.

I love the way it turned out. There’s no way I would look at this and know that it was made from recycled packaging!

Originally, I wasn’t planning on making this a tutorial. I just took some shots while I was working just in case I wanted to review them later. Anywhoo, I hope you enjoyed it!

Studio Play – January

Studio play is such a joy for me because I can create with an end goal or specific Ifinish line. I literally just allow myself to play and experiment with whatever is on hand. I never know what is going to come of it. Some I love, some….not so much. Some I keep, some I do not. Some I completely paint over with gesso and start over, because I can.  I allow myself that freedom, and it really provides a nourishing nest, so to speak, for the creative juices to swirl and gather.

One thing I’ve learned through this studio play time is that if you show up, with your brushes up, the creative gods will rain down upon you and shower you with lots of ideas, nudges, and whispers….but you gotta be ready to receive.

In this recent session, I created these 5 piece, using new colors, trying new things. I don’t loooooove all of them, but I love the time I spent making them.  So, here’s to more and more studio play time….where I will show up….with brushes up… and await for creativity to rain down upon me.

Cute Butterfly Journal Tutorial

In this tutorial I am sharing how to take a plain ole journal and Jazz it Up a bit!

2013-09-13

Hi guys n gals! As many of you know, I love butterflies.  It’s one of God’s magical creations.  I made this little butterfly journal the other days and I thought I’d show you how I did it!

I started off with this small journal I picked up on the clearance rack at BAM. I think I paid $3 for it.  It was boring, but just the right size for my purse, so I grabbed it and thought ‘I’ll just jazz it up later’. It sat around my studio for a while, but I finally got around to it.

First step was to select a color scheme. I went through my paper stash and picked some papers I liked, then selected some paints to compliment the papers.

DownloadsNext, I put decoupage glue all over the canvas.  I like to use the deco glue because it dries quickly, and seals at the same time.IMG_20130906_165924_080

Then I just started adding the papers, tearing and placing them where it felt right, and glued them down with the deco glue.

Ta-da!

After the paper is glued down and dry, I added some paint to the back cover, and around the edges of the paper. I smeared it on the edges to give it a bit of a blend. Next, I added some texture using recycled materials as stencils, just to give some interest, and then put the butterflies on with the deco glue.

After the main elements were in place, I added some shadowing, and ink to give a bit of an aged look, and used the white paint pen for highlights.

The final steps were to add some tape embellishments, stamps, and rub-ons until I was happy with the layered look I was going for.  Then, I sealed the whole thing with the deco glue.  I love it!

Now I have a cute place to keep my notes and sketches!  Next time you see a plain ole journal on the clearance table, snatch it up, take it home…and Jazz it Up!  Thanks for stopping by my blog. I hope you enjoyed this post.

Loves n Hugs, Danita
